Some elliptical trainers have calorie counters, but they are not necessarily accurate.  The more you pay for the unit the more you should expect for accessories that work properly.  The $300 machine isn’t meant to compete on a par with the $2,000 model. If you are able to input data like age and weight, chances are good that the calorie counter will be more than adequate. Otherwise, the results screen is probably only guessing based on length of exercise time plus the resistance level being used.Estimates of progress can vary, but generally you can expect a medium level trainer to burn 340 – 350 calories in 30 minutes for females and 500 – 550 for men.Of course, increasing resistance and doing more interval training will increase your caloric burn.

I am a 5′3 female who had gotten up to 210 lbs! I joined a gym, changed my eating habits and began a regular exercise routine using an elliptical machine. Before long, my weight started falling off. So far I’ve lost 30 lbs with 25 more to go to reach my goal. I use the machine 4-5 times a week for 30 minutes.

The elliptical machine is great for cardiovascular workouts. To burn off calories however you should consider staggering your volicity.  In other words, go strong for about 60 seconds and then slow down for about 30.  By rotating the pace you almost can trick your body into enhancing your metabolic activity.
